How Do You Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT? What We Changed on a Manufacturer's Website (PMG Case Study)

Short answer: ChatGPT and other AI assistants recommend businesses whose websites state the facts buyers ask about in plain words, on pages the AI crawlers are allowed to read. For Product Management Group (PMG), a Boca Raton contract manufacturer, that meant pages per product format, published minimums, timelines and cost ranges, FAQ sections and structured data. By November 2026, ChatGPT named PMG first in our test.

Definition: Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of making a website the clearest, most quotable answer to the questions customers ask Google and AI assistants, so those tools name the business when someone asks.

What happened when we asked ChatGPT about PMG?

In our tests in November 2026, we asked ChatGPT: "What's the best supplement manufacturer in Boca Raton?" Its answer began: "My first recommendation would be Product Management Group (PMG)." We recorded the test on video, and it's on the PMG case study page.

One honest caveat up front: AI answers change from person to person and day to day. A first-place answer in our test isn't a permanent ranking, and no one can promise it. What we can show is what was on the site when it happened, and what the business got from it.

Key numbers from the PMG case study (source: gohuntr.com/case-studies/pmg)

  • #1: ChatGPT's first recommendation for "best supplement manufacturer in Boca Raton" in our November 2026 tests.
  • 24 brands sent project inquiries between mid-September and November 3, 2026.
  • 17 of them completed the full two-step brief with product, quantity and timeline details.
  • More than 3×: Google search visitors more than tripled within two months, led by the supplement manufacturing cost article.
  • 2 languages: the site is fully in English and Spanish.

What did PMG's website look like before, and what changed?

PMG already had a website. The problem was that it wasn't producing many leads. Brands looking for a manufacturer couldn't quickly see what PMG makes, which formats it offers, or how to start a project, so they left without reaching out. Here's the before and after, using only what's on the case study page and the live site.

Question a buyer (or an AI) asks Before (per the case study) After (live today)
What can you make? Brands "couldn't quickly see what PMG makes" A page for each product format: capsules and tablets, powders, stick packs, liquids, lotions and creams, serums, gels, shampoo and conditioner
How do I start a project? Not clear, so brands "left without reaching out" A two-step brief, with quote requests linked from the guides
What's the minimum order? (not described) Stated in plain words, e.g. the About page box: "Minimums from 1,000 units"
How long does it take? (not described) "Private label in about 60–90 days" on the About page
What will it cost? (not described) A full cost guide, now one of the site's most visited pages
Can I read it in Spanish? (not described) English and Spanish content

Why do AI assistants pick some businesses and not others?

AI assistants that search the web can only recommend what they can read and match to the question. Three things decide that.

  1. They have to be allowed in. OpenAI's crawler documentation describes OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features, and recommends allowing it in robots.txt (OpenAI). Perplexity says the same about its bot: "PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity" (Perplexity). PMG's robots.txt allows every crawler.
  2. Google's AI features use the normal Google index. Google says: "There are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary," and a page must be "indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet" (Google Search Central). So the basics (fast pages, one clear title, real content) still come first.
  3. The answer has to be on the page. If a buyer asks "what's the minimum order?" and your site says "contact us," there's nothing to quote. PMG's pages give the number.

What should your website have to get recommended? (The Answer-Ready Checklist)

This is the checklist we used on PMG. Download the printable checklist and score your own site: one point per line.

  1. One page per thing you sell. PMG has a page per product format, not one "services" page.
  2. Your key numbers in plain words. Minimums, timelines, price ranges, service area. Put them near the top.
  3. A short fact box on the About page. PMG's says: founded 2016, based in Boca Raton, minimums from 1,000 units, private label in about 60–90 days.
  4. Guides that answer buying questions. PMG's cost guide became one of its most visited pages.
  5. An FAQ on the pages people land on. Written as the questions customers actually ask.
  6. Hidden labels for machines (structured data). PMG's pages carry Organization and FAQ structured data.
  7. AI crawlers allowed. Check robots.txt for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot.
  8. A plain-text summary file (llms.txt). PMG's lists its key facts for AI tools. It's a proposal, not a standard, and Google says you don't need it for AI Overviews, so treat it as a bonus.
  9. Author and date on every article. Every PMG post shows who wrote it and when.
  10. An easy way to say "I'm interested." PMG's two-step brief tells the team what the buyer wants before the first call.

Score 8–10: you're in good shape. 5–7: you're probably missing answers buyers want. Under 5: AI tools have very little to quote.

Does FAQ schema still matter now that Google dropped FAQ rich results?

Google stopped showing FAQ rich results in Search starting May 7, 2026 (Google Search Central updates). So FAQ markup won't get you the old expandable answers in Google anymore. The FAQ section itself still matters: it puts the question and the answer on the page in plain words, which is exactly what AI assistants and Google's AI features read. Keep the FAQs; don't expect a special Google display from the markup.

Did being recommended by AI actually bring in business?

Yes, that's the part that matters. Between mid-September and November 3, 2026, 24 brands sent PMG project inquiries, and 17 completed the full brief with product, quantity and timeline details. Brands now tell PMG that an AI assistant like ChatGPT sent them, and ChatGPT and Gemini send visitors straight to the site (PMG case study).

The lesson for any small business: the AI recommendation and the lead form work together. Being named is only useful if the page it sends people to answers their next question and makes it easy to reach out.

How can you check whether AI tools can find your business?

  1. Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini the question a customer would ask, with your city: "best [your service] in [your city]."
  2. Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and make sure it doesn't block AI crawlers.
  3. Look at your top 3 pages: is your price range, timeline or service area written on the page, or only in your head?
  4. Run Huntr's free Digital DNA Test. It scores your site across 8 dimensions (Design, SEO, Content, Conversion, Trust, Performance, Mobile and Competitive) in about 60 seconds.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT answers? There's no fixed timeline, and no one can guarantee it. PMG's new lead form went live in mid-September 2026, and ChatGPT named PMG first in our November 2026 tests. AI crawlers have to revisit your pages first.

Do I need an llms.txt file? It can help AI tools find your key facts, but it's optional. llms.txt is a proposed standard, and Google says you don't need new "AI text files" or special markup to appear in AI Overviews.

Is AEO different from SEO? They overlap. SEO gets your pages found and ranked; AEO makes them the clearest answer to a specific question. Google's AI features rely on the same index as regular search, so you need both.

Will blocking GPTBot keep me out of ChatGPT? OpenAI uses different crawlers for different jobs: GPTBot for model training and OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search. If you want to appear in ChatGPT search answers, allow OAI-SearchBot.

Does Google-Extended affect my Google ranking? No. Google says Google-Extended "does not impact a site's inclusion in Google Search nor is it used as a ranking signal."
